Organization Overview
About Us
New Horizons in Autism ("NHIA"), a non-profit organization based in Neptune, NJ, was founded in 1980 by a group of parents who were concerned about the severe lack of services for their children with autism, known as the Community Living for the Autistic. The organization began to offer comprehensive programs that enable individuals with autism to remain in the community and avoid institutionalization. NHIA is dedicated to serving NJ residents with autism, and their families, by delivering community-based services, providing advocacy, support, and technical awareness and educating the public about autism. Currently the organization serves over 300 NJ families through respite, behavior therapy, after-school, vocational, and residential programs. All services provided are customized to meet the needs of each individual in an attempt to improve all skills. The teaching philosophy of NHIA emphasizes independence - and not caregiving. OUr individuals experience a structured environment and daily scheduled routines that they and their families can rely on to provide consistency and familiarity. Age-appropriate activities focus on communication, language, behavioral issues, community integration and social skills training. But most importantly, the individual is learning, step-by-step, to become independent.

This is definitely a cause I want to belong to cause this hits home! My best friend's first born son has been diagnosed with autism and she has been "goin' thru it" since his birth :(
It was not a happy time for her, she couldnt even enjoy being his mom cause she had to be more like his "therapist"! It was hard to watch...the feedings, the behavior issues, the "not" talking, etc....it is rough...he is now going to turn 5yrs old this year and he still is not talking....My best friend is at her wits end and then on top of that, her youngest son was also diagnosed, but she was told he only has a "mild" case of it, but you could never tell cause he seemed to be fine......They live in Sicklerville, NJ.

I'd love to hear more about how I can help your organization. I am a 'jersey girl' myself, and autism is a matter close to my heart.
