Who We Are
For the past eighteen years, our volunteers have donated their time and expertise to provide free surgical, medical and dental care for impoverished children and young adults in developing countries around the world. This team of physicians, dentists and nurses evolved into the current Boston-based Medical Missions for Children, Inc. (MMFC), which was founded as a nonprofit 501 C (3) organization in 2000.
Traveling to ten countries with the help of 12 – 30 volunteers per mission, MMFC is able to provide medical assistance to over 1,000 children each year. Additionally, MMFC is the only organization that commits to comprehensive patient follow-up care, having done so for over seventeen years. Each mission is comprised of surgeons, dentists, anesthesiologists, nurses, medical specialists, surgical technicians, materials personnel, and administrative coordinators.
MMFC currently conducts 13-15 missions per year, traveling to Ecuador, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, Ukraine, Rwanda, Tanzania, Mali, India, and the Philippines.
It is the tremendous dedication of Medical Missions for Children volunteers that makes our work possible.
Our Organization's Mission
MMFC is dedicated to provide safe, high quality medical, surgical and dental care to the greatest possible number of under-privileged children and young adults with severe congenital deformities and injuries throughout the world. MMFC also strives to continue its commitment to education and the introduction of state of the art surgical and dental technology, providing equipment and expertise to local hospitals that have only the most rudimentary facilities.
Our Programs
MMFC has created didactic training programs that serve to advance medical, nursing and dental techniques at each of our current thirteen mission sites. These programs include an average of 5 to 10 lectures during each mission and provide reference and instructional CDs, books, brochures, as well as memberships to online medical journals. Lecture series and seminars cover a range of topics including innovative surgical and anesthesia techniques with prime concentration on patient safety, OR & recovery room nursing patient care, proper sanitation practices, modern dental procedures, pediatric dentistry, and a variety of other topics. In addition, MMFC is in the process of creating a fellowship training program that further integrates international healthcare assistance with educational outreach.
