About Us
The Heartland Humane Society is a private non profit 501(c)3 corporation governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. As a non-profit corporation we rely mainly on private donations. We generate income through our annual membership fees, adoption program, fundraising events, and sales of t-shirts, etc. All fees go towards spaying or neutering, general & emergency medical care, food & shelter for the animals that come under our care, and fees associated with administering these programs. Formerly known as the Yankton Area Humane Society, HHS was established as a non-profit organization in 2000 by a dedicated group of volunteers who came together to improve the lives of homeless and abused animals. By 2006, planning began for a permanent shelter building. A Board of Directors was formed and the name was changed to Heartland Humane Society to include Yankton, Vermillion, Hartington, and the surrounding communities. Through the continued support from all our members, donors, & volunteers; HHS now has a designated building fund to continue with our goal of a physical shelter. In the meantime, the temporary office will serve nicely for all our administrative functions.
