About Us
Community LINC is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting Kansas City's homeless families and developing self-sufficient families.
Emergency shelters, while essential, are not always the answer to restoring lives because they are ill-equipped to deal with the underlying causes of homelessness. By the time many families enter homeless services, they have incurred thousands of dollars in utility debt and landlord judgments, and endured unemployment and loss of personal belongings. These barriers alone are enough to stand in the way of families moving into permanent housing.
At Community LINC, 24 furnished apartments provide transitional shelter, and families are given asset-based coaching, case management, mental health therapy, life-skills/parenting classes, and budgeting support. Children’s programming provides tutoring, mentoring, life-skills and safety activities while parents are in classes. Adults are required to be employed or in a career education track, and save half of their income to retire debts and prepare for permanent housing.
Community LINC serves close to 50 families a year, all in the greater Kansas City area and is proven-successful with 80% of residents completing the program and moving into permanent housing. At least 90% of families who complete the program will maintain their independence from emergency assistance over the two years following completion of the program. Community LINC works with volunteers and uses donations to implement this proven, successful programming.
Who We Are
Since 1988 Community LINC has provided homeless families a safe, stable home. We provides training that equips homeless families to help themselves – teaching life skills, job skills, money management, and instilling accountability to change their lives. Community LINC provides 25,000 bed nights for homeless families each year. On average 80% of the families leave for permanent housing. Of those families 95% will continue to live independently for at least the two year follow-up period. In the last six years 45 families who came to us homeless left as homeowners. Community LINC is not a band-aid approach to help Kansas City’s Homeless Families, we teach them to succeed.
